Paola USD 368 officials will be making more contributions to the American Legion for Russell Field.

Board of Education members unanimously approved to continue funding for the dirt and grass work on the field and for lights.

Legion baseball chairman Jeff Johnson spoke Monday evening and said he applied for grants and received funding from the city. He said $31,000 has been raised for four 90-foot wooden poles, two transformers and the labor to install them. The lights, poles and transformers were provided by Kansas City Power & Light.

“KCP&L will be down there tomorrow to erect the new poles so work is starting tomorrow on the poles,” Johnson said Monday.

Johnson said there was also concern regarding the dirt on the field. He said it made it almost unplayable. Work began last week to fix the problems.

“The weather kind of cooperated with us,” Johnson said. “We got some dirt donated to us from the city and from Green Country Soil. They were all very generous.”

He said crews from the city and county were hauling dirt for two days last week. Johnson said there was a safety concern in the foul territory on the infield that goes to the dug-out, but that concern no longer exists.

“It took a lot of dirt. I would like to see us get some more dirt in soon to taper out the first base and second base side,” Johnson said. “We believe that we alleviated the safety concern on the infield and foul territory.”

He said the issues will be resolved by the Paola High School baseball season.

“I know there was some concern with playing the PHS games on the road and what not,” Johnson said. “We believe that we have that alleviated by baseball season. That’s where things season.”

The board unanimously approved a proposal for the field that included:
  •     The continuance to pay $2,500 and provide other services for the priority right to use the field during the PHS season.
  •     Providing $5,000 ($2,500 for 2009 and $2,500 for 2010) to be used for dirt and grass work on the field.
  •     Writing a check to the American Legion and Citizens State Bank for $5,000 for principal payments on the $40,000 lighting loan.
In other business:
  •     The board unanimously approved the refinancing of 1999 bonds.
  •     The board tabled a driver’s education proposal.
  •     A three-year technology plan was unanimously approved
  •     A special work session is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 23. Bonds and driver’s education will be discussed during the session.
