The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has updated its immunization requirements for children attending school in 2009-10.

Requirements are updated every year by KDHE. According to the USD 230 school district, all students will be required to have three doses of hepatitis and two doses of varicella for the 2010-11 school year.

Based on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization, the requirements include:

  •     Diphteria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP): Five doses are required. Four doses are acceptable if the fourth dose is given after a student’s fourth birthday. By the age of 11, a booster dose of Tdap is required.
  •     Poliomyelitis (IPV/OPV): Four doses are required. Three doses are acceptable if the third dose is given on or after the child’s fourth birthday.
  •     Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Two doses are required.
  •     Hepatitis B: Three doses are required through the ninth-grade.
  •     Varicella (chickenpox): Two doses are required for kindergarten; one dose is required for students in first- through ninth-grade, unless there is a history of varicella documented by a licensed physician. Two doses are currently recommended by the ACIP for all ages.
  •     Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB): Three doses are required for children less than five years of age in any preschool or childcare program operated by the school.
  •     Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV7): Four doses are required for children less than five years of age in any preschool or childcare program operated by the school.
  •     Hepatitis A: Two doses are required for children less than five years of age in a preschool or childcare program operated by the school.
