Even with few contested races on the ballot, it still is important for voters to head to the polls Tuesday.

Paola Mayor Artie Stuteville and Paola City Council members Jim Pritchard and Jack Rowlett Jr. are all running unopposed in the election to retain their seats, but in a small community, write-in candidates always have a chance to win.

Paola USD 368 Board of Education president Amiee Seck, who represents District No. 6, and board member Michael Yocam, who represents District No. 2, also are running unopposed, but district No. 4 representative Kelly Franke is being challenged by John Leighty.

The board has been in the news lately as the district looks to make budget cuts based on anticipated cuts in state funding.
There also was disagreement on the board earlier this year as to whether parochial students should still be allowed to participate in athletics at Paola Middle School.

These issues directly impact Paola residents, parents and students, and anyone registered to vote should do their part and head to the polls to let their voice be heard.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion building, 5 W. Delaware St.

Friday is the last day voters may apply for an advance ballot to be mailed, and voters will have until noon Monday to cast their ballot early at the Miami County Administration building.

The votes will be canvassed April 13.

It may not be the presidential election, but the positions up for grabs Tuesday have the ability to affect the entire local community.
