Rick Schoenberger is already used to seeing customers from all across the country after his business, The BBQ Shack, was featured on The Food Network, but his popular Paola eatery may now get a whole new group of barbecue seekers after one of his recipes was featured in the new book “America’s Best BBQ: 100 Recipes from America’s Best Smokehouses, Pits, Shacks, Rib Joints, Roadhouses, and Restaurants.”

Schoenberger said he was contacted in December 2007 by the authors of the book, barbecue enthusiasts Ardie A. Davis and Paul Kirk. Schoenberger gave them a few of his recipes, although he made sure to point out that he didn’t give away the secrets of his well-known sauce.

One of his recipes for wings can be found in the book, along with a brief profile about himself and his Andy Griffith-themed restaurant, which recently moved from North Pearl Street to its new home in the Paola Commons shopping strip along Peoria Street.

The pages in the book are filled with barbecue pictures and memorabilia from different restaurants, and Schoenberger was pleased to discover that the fake pig that has become somewhat of a mascot for his barbecue joint made it onto one of the pages.

“I guess we have to give it a name now,” he said of the hog that sits near the entrance to his restaurant.
