Work continues on the fountain that has been a staple in Paola’s Park Square for decades, and the official welcoming of its new design is set to take place next month.

Triangle Builders of Paola has been working to update the fountain, which is a project made possible thanks to a $200,000 donation last year by former Paola resident Jackson Goss and his family. About $120,000 was allocated for the renovation of the fountain.

About $43,000 of the amount was spent last year to improve the Park Square gazebo, which has a new roof and paint job, among other things.

Paola City Council members last week approved a $24,021.37 payment to Triangle Builders for ongoing work on the fountain, which is set to have a single cascading stream in the middle of the fountain, a 20-foot spray ring encircling the fountain spraying water streams in toward the center of the fountain, and six separate cascade jets scattered around the outside of the fountain, according to the design.

It also was announced that the dedication for the new fountain is scheduled for 4 p.m. June 27.

In other business at the May 12 meeting, council members:

Approved a conditional-use permit for a new fire station at 202 E. Wea St., which is a city-owned brick building that used to be a schoolhouse. The council also approved a $201,631 payment to Legacy Contractors for the project. City Manager Jay Wieland said the project is split into two phases, with the first focusing on demolition and installation of geothermal wells, and the second focusing on construction. He also said about 3,000 pounds of metal have already been recycled during the demolition process. The city has contracted with Legacy Contractors of Paola to build the station for $1,999,991, and Legacy will have 280 days to complete the project once the building permit is approved. Because the city is using the design/build process, the contract amount cannot change unless the city council approves a change order. Volunteer firefighters currently are sharing a building with Paola City Hall at 19 E. Peoria St.

Listened to American Legion Post No. 156 commander Gene Farmer thank the city for donating money to help put new lights up at Russell Field in Wallace Park. “We feel in our hearts that the whole community is behind us all the way,” Farmer said.

Nellie Brandt: ...
I have watched the renivation of the fountain in the twon square. It is a wonderful job, the best part of the whole prject is the fact that the water is not BLUE. I and several others thought that the blue water was horrible.
