City officials are working with the Old School House Committee to establish more manageable ways to save the city’s oldest school building. Rory Hale, director of public works, said the purpose of forming the committee was to discuss if the city is able to obtain funding to save or restore the building and what steps to take. “There are still a lot of issues that have to be addressed because it’s a public facility,” Hale said. “If a decision is made, the city council can still be involved in the process.” The committee is looking at a feasibility study for the Old School House located at 401 N. Madison St. The Civic Center gymnasium has been closed because of conditions in the building. Spring Hill City Council President Steven Ellis brought up the idea of having the issue on a ballot for voters to decide. “I don’t want to sit up here and decide how we’re going to spend millions of dollars,” Ellis said. Council member Chris Leaton suggested revising the resolution for the school house committee. City council members said there will be more discussions in the future during committee and council meetings. The group was established in February by the city council. The Old School House Committee is scheduled to meet 5:30 p.m. Thursday in room 15 of City Hall, 401 N. Madison St.
