The Miami County Cancer Foundation and the Saddle Ridge Trailriders have planned a fun-filled weekend and invite the public to the fourth annual Cancer Trail Ride Saturday and Sunday near Hillsdale Lake.

According to the TriWillow Farm Web site, having a horse isn’t required to enjoy this fund-raising event. Food, games, prizes and a dance with live music will also be part of the fun.

The cost is $10 per person or $30 per family, and activities will begin Saturday morning. The trail ride heads out at 10 a.m. and will include a wagon train. A horse shoe tournament is scheduled for 2 p.m., and dinner will be at 5 p.m. The menu will include half of a smoked hog, brisket, turkey and Dutch oven potatoes. Everyone is invited to bring and show off a side dish of their own making. Raffle tickets will be available for the other half of the hog.
Prizes will be awarded for the youngest participant, the oldest and the person who traveled the farthest to attend. There will be a fund-raising auction at 6:30 p.m., and donated items are welcome. Then, at 8 p.m., riders and other participants can dance to the music of the Country Jammers, a local Miami County band.

Sunday activities will begin at 10 a.m., when the poker ride heads out. Participation in the poker ride is $20 per hand, and door prizes will be awarded. Then, at 1 p.m., there will be a pot luck brunch.

Event chairwoman Laura Courtney said proceeds from the Sunday activities will go to help diverticulitis patient Rodney Brandt with medical expenses.

Anyone wanting to donate items for the auction, donate cash, or learn more about the Cancer Trail Ride may call MCCF Event Chairwoman Laura Courtney at (913) 731-1036, auctioneer David Schlesener at (913) 731-7653, Carl Courtney at (913) 731-2957 or Deb Burchett at (913) 244-9711. State park fees may apply and are not included in the event prices. For reservations for pens or camping, contact Ed Belfanti at (913) 731-4595 before 8 p.m.

The Miami County Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization whose volunteers work to help make life easier for cancer patients in Miami County. Through this fund-raiser, anyone can help with that effort.
