Christmas in October is in the fall, but the deadline is coming soon.

In late September and early October, volunteers will help rehabilitate homes for low income, elderly and disabled homeowners. Families that have someone serving in the military away from home can also participate in the program.

In 2008, three families were assisted with improvements by the Spring Hill and Miami County Christmas in October organizations. The scheduled dates for repair work are Sept. 26, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10.

Volunteers who want to help fix up homes can contact Barbara Hines at (913) 592-2606.

Residents who need their homes repaired may contact Stevie Morris, community social services manager for the Spring Hill Multi-Service Center, 401 N. Madison St. at (913) 592-2304.

Applications are available at the Multi-Service Center. The due date is July 17.
To qualify for home repairs, residents must live in the Spring Hill school district, own their home, have personal property taxes paid up and qualify for financial aid.

The program was started in 1984 by Dick Miller and John McMeel. About 100 volunteers, friends and students from Rockhurst High School helped the founders start the program. Twenty houses were fixed up during the first year.

The program later expanded throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. An average of 400 houses are worked on every year. According to the organization’s Web site, www.christmasinoctober.org, the volunteer program is the largest of its kind in the United States.
