Overcast skies blanketing Miami County on Saturday morning couldn’t keep a group of leather-clad bikers from hopping on their choppers and riding for a good cause.

Members of the Eagle Riders District 1, which is composed of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries 2673 in Paola, 2700 in Ottawa and 700 in Olathe, gathered together for the second-annual Midland Hospice Benefit Dice Ride.

Streams of sunlight that found holes through the cloudy skies Saturday glistened off the chrome of about 20 motorcycles in the parking lot of the Paola Eagles building just south of town. Inside, the bikers enjoyed a hearty breakfast of biscuits and gravy, signed up for the dice game and purchased raffle tickets.

Event Coordinator Deb Howard said she was pleased to see so many bikers come out for the event despite the threatening weather, but she said there were more bikers last year, when about 50 participants raised about $1,200. Saturday’s event raised $505.50, Howard said.

Still, Howard expected to pick up more riders at each stop, which included ones in Olathe, Pomona, Baldwin and finally the Ottawa Eagle’s building, where they would have dinner.

The total ride spanned about 110 miles.

The money collected during the ride will benefit Midland Hospice in Ottawa. Scott Wasser, a registered nurse for Midland Hospice, hopped on his Harley and joined along with the other riders for the event.

He said the hospice center doesn’t turn anyone away, but many don’t have insurance coverage, and every little bit of money donated to the center helps.

Eagle Riders District 1 plans to have a motorcycle ride to benefit charities in each of their three locations, with the Paola ride set for July 18 to benefit Heads Up, a local brain injury support group, Howard said.

Last year’s Paola ride benefited Lakemary Center.

“We keep it in the community,” Howard said.
