Karen Ulanski has a passion for what she does, and that passion was rewarded earlier this month.

Ulanski, who is regional director of adult education centers in Paola, Osawatomie and Ottawa, was presented with the Founder’s Award at the Missouri Valley Adult Education Association’s annual conference June 4 in Kansas City, Mo.

The award is the highest any person can receive within the association, which is a collection of adult education centers in seven states: Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Ulanksi said she was completely shocked when the award — the final of the evening — was presented to her.

“I was so surprised,” she said.

Assistant Director Kim Kirk and Sue Choens of an adult education center in Butler County, Mo, nominated Ulanksi for the award.
Ulanksi expressed her love for what she does during Sunday’s graduation ceremony at Paola High School for adults who had earned their GEDs.

“They make me laugh, cry and keep coming back,” Ulanksi said of the adult students. “I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be than right here.”

Although she is honored to receive the award, Ulanski said the real reason she does what she does is to help the adults complete an important step in their education and better their lives.

“Our building is full of second chances,” Ulanski said.
