School may be out, but youth of different ages are still finding ways to learn — and have fun — during summer enrichment classes at the Paola Community Center.

The historic building was busy June 10, as youth gathered for classes on photography, theater and clay sculpting. There are several more classes of varying topics offered throughout the summer, and even though registration is closed, Community Center Director Chad Myers said there are some openings, and interested people should call him for details at 259-3650.

Jessica Schneider guided four talented youth ranging in age from 8 to 10 during a theater class last week in the Community Center’s auditorium. After warming up by pretending their bodies were made out of wood, the youngsters tried out a mirror activity in which they mimicked the moves of their partner. They also played a game in which they were given a word and then had to act out a word that rhymed with it while the rest of the group shouted out guesses.

Downstairs, a group of children were having fun getting their hands sticky while they made a gooey substance called flubber during a class called Clay It. Instructor Wilma Schwermer gave each participant a copy of the recipe.

Next door, older youth were fine tuning their photography skills, as instructor Rachel Pinkerton gave each participant the freedom to use props to set up a scene to be photographed. The youth ranged in age from 9 to 15.

Classes are scheduled to continue until about mid-July, Myers said.
