Moving without the basketball was one of the fundamentals coach Dave Cash was stressing at the Paola Panther basketball camp last week.

The movement sets everything up in the half court offense, Cash said.

“We did a nice job of passing the ball,” he said. “But, we need to move without the ball.”

Dozens of high school players attended the camp which opened June 15 and concluded Thursday.

Sophomore Travis Hayes looked impressive at center, not only battling for position and rebounds inside, but with his ability to put the ball on the floor and drive the lane.

Skylar Hawkins showed off some of his fancy footwork and put on a passing clinic himself, delivering some great no-look passes to open players in the lane.

Luke Johnston went to work inside, grabbing some big offensive and defensive rebounds in five-on-five drills.

Justin Dunmars demonstrated his perimeter shooting and followed his shot well, attacking the lane for rebounds.

On the second to last day of the camp, everyone hit the floor running, Cash said.

“That is probably the best we have worked all week,” Cash said. “We have really improved on the fast break.

“We need to run the fast break, but we have to be under control and make good passes,” he said.

Running its half-court offense, the Panthers need to make sure to swing the ball more and make the defense work.

“Against a good team, you are going to have to work the ball back against the weak side and swing it more,” Cash said. “You have to swing it from side to side. We are making a lot of improvement.”

Senior Brint Hastert ran up and down the floor, running with the offense on the wing. He popped a couple of nice outside jump shots, penetrated the lane for some strong drives and hit the boards hard.

Conner Kresin showed off his shot and used his speed and quickness to drive to the basket.

Jesse Smail was a force on the boards, using his size to come down with some big rebounds. Smail put himself in position to rebound the ball by doing the little things, like boxing out against his opponent.
