WICHITA — The Spring Hill eighth-grade Broncos boys’ basketball team placed second in the MAYB Kickoff Tournament. The Broncos were 4-3 in the tournament, advancing to the consolation finals game in the B-bracket. Spring Hill’s bracket featured 48 teams from seven states. Spring Hill lots its consolation finals game, 47-44, against the Oklahoma Slam. The three-day tournament opened June 12 and concluded June 14. The Broncos were 2-1 in pool play, defeating the Kansas Bruisers, 56-13, and the Wichita Rockets, 33-26. The only loss in pool play came against the Explosion, an AAU team from Oklahoma. Eight players scored against the Bruisers, including Wally Nellor, who led the team with 10 points. Austin Jager and David Olson each had eight points. Trevor Cluck, Chris Bybee and Danny Hodge each had seven points. Kainon Langley scored six points and Jordan Martin had five points. Bybee and Jager anchored the defense with six steals apiece. Defense set the tone in the victory against the Rockets as Spring Hill forced 16 steals. Bybee scored 12 points. Ty Lovetinsky finished with 11 points. Spring Hill played tough in its loss to the Explosion. Langley led the Broncos with six points. Hodge, Bybee and Nellor each had five points. Olson led the team with four rebounds. The Broncos trailed the Oklahoma Wizards by two points at halftime in bracket play, 26-24. Spring Hill fell by a final of 49-40. “We played well in this game, but we just had too many turnovers on offense,” coach Hodge said. Olson, Langley and Bybee each scored nine points to lead the offense. Cluck had six points and Hodge added five points. Langley led the Broncos on the boards with eight rebounds. Bybee led the team in steals and Jager led the team in assists, coach Hodge said. Jager scored six points with five rebounds, two steals and four assists as Spring Hill defeated the Newton Raiders 46-30. Olson scored eight points. Bybee added seven points. Lovetinsky scored six points. Hodge had four points. Nellor and Martin each had two points. Olson and Cluck each had six rebounds. Spring Hill’s victory against the Raiders put the Broncos in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, facing the Kansas City Premiere. Defense was once again the calling card for the Broncos, who held the Premiere to 28 points en route to a 38-28 victory. Cluck led the Broncos with 11 points. Hodge finished with eight points. Bybee had seven points. Olson added six points. In the consolation final, the Broncos played the Oklahoma Slam and trailed 28-16 at halftime. Spring Hill fell behind by 16 points in the second half but played some tremendous defense, coach Hodge said, to cut the deficit to three points. The Broncos had three attempts at tying the game with a 3-pointer but could not get it to fall. In the final push to get back in the game, Spring Hill got key 3-pointers by Nellor, Lovetinsky and Cluck. Bybee led Spring Hill with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Cluck had nine points. Hodge and Nellor each had five points. Jager and Langley each had four points. Langley did a tremendous job on the boards, coach Hodge said. He led the team with 10 rebounds. Cluck had seven rebounds. Jager and Olson each had four rebounds. Playing for the Broncos were Chris Bybee, Trevor Cluck, Danny Hodge, Austin Jager, Kanion Langley, Ty Lovetinsky, Jordan Martin, Wally Nellor, David Olson, Riley Thomas and Dalton Young. Spring Hill was coached by Duane Hodge and Shannon Martin.
