Matt Werkowitch threw a no-hitter and Ty Moore clubbed a solo home run as the Paola American Legion team played its first game in the newly renovated Russell Field.

Paola took the first game from Chanute 9-4, highlighted by the home run from Moore in the June 23 doubleheader.

Werkowitch propelled Paola to a 2-0 shutout victory with his first no-hitter of the summer.

“Matt was pitching to contact and used his defense,” Paola manager Brad Huber said. “He pitched a gem.”

Two days later, in a doubleheader against Fort Scott on Thursday evening, Paola could not make the routine play defensively and lost by scores of 12-4 and 13-2.
Paola could not overcome the errors which spotted Fort Scott to leads in both games, Huber said.

“We made the routine plays Tuesday,” he said. “We didn’t tonight.”

Paola, 8-9, has the potential to be very good, Huber said. But, it is fixing the little things.

“The defense is something we can fix,” he said. “We are not that far away from being a really good team. We just have to make the plays were are supposed to make.”

Center fielder Buzz Hermreck made a diving catch in the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener, robbing Fort Scott of a base hit.

Moore, playing shortstop, scooped up a ground ball, stepped on second and threw a strike to Cale Karigan at first base to complete a double play in the second game.

Nick Wilson got Paola fired up with a double to the gap in left center in the bottom of the sixth but was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
Pat Werkowitch, Hermreck, Moore and Wilson each had one run scored in the first game.

Jack Pursley started the game for Paola and took the loss.

Pat Werkowitch singled, doubled and scored both of Paola’s runs in the second game.

Werkowitch, who played for the Paola High School Panthers, was glad to be back on Russell Field.

Paola High School and the American Legion team played home games at the Rock Stadium while work on Russell Field was being completed.

“It feels good to have our home field again,” Werkowitch said. “The Rock Stadium wasn’t home. It feels a lot better to be on the big field. I like the improvements they made with the infield, and the step down dugouts are very nice.”

Wilson started the second game and got the loss. Josh Taylor pitched in relief.

Matt Dickey unlucky at second base: Dickey made a nice catch in a pick-off play at second base Thursday only to have his hand cleated by the Fort Scott base runner. Dickey left to have the hand looked at and received a couple of stitches. When he returned, he looked at his glove and could not believe his bad luck at having the runner step on the only part of his glove that was not protected.

Wooden-bat game takes toll: Moore lost one of his favorite bats Thursday. Teammate Logan Smith was borrowing Moore’s bat for the second game, which was a wooden-bat game and he got sawed off on the handle on an inside fastball.
