If you spent anytime outside in Miami County last week, you may have thought you were in a desert because of the scorching temperatures.

Though this week should be cooler than last, the summertime causes outdoor workers to take extra precautions while working in the heat.

Ask any mail carrier, garbage collector or construction worker and they’ll all tell you the same thing — drink plenty of water.

“It’s kind of hard to stay cool because there’s not a lot you can do,” mail carrier, Sally Seyler said. “I just take little breaks here and there it the air conditioning when I can.

Seyler said she typically drinks four to five bottles of water a day and spends about six hours outdoors.

Garbage collectors, Donnie Althouse and Paul Hartley said they drink about a gallon and a half of water each everyday.

“We’re out eight to nine hours a day in the sun,” Althouse said. “You have to have the liquids.”

The construction workers who are working on the Old KC Bridge couldn’t agree more.

They drink about 15 gallons of water split between 10 workers each day.

“With the risks of heat exhaustion, I have to monitor the guys,” construction foreman Shane Weimer said.

The heat has caused the workers to shorten their hours from 10 a day to eight.

“With 20 degree weather, you can put more clothes on,” Weimer said. “There’s no good part about the heat.”

How to Beat the Heat

Eat smaller, lighter meals more frequently rather than fewer larger meals.

Plan outdoor activities for the morning or evening.

Run cool water over pulse points, like wrists
.
Avoid alcohol and drinks with caffeine and lots of sugar.

Take a cool shower or bath to lower body temperature.

Eat spicy foods because the sweat you make will help cool you off.
