Paola theater students took the stage at Kansas City’s Starlight Theater during the Blue Star Awards ceremony May 21, and the young performers didn’t leave the event empty-handed. The students’ performance of “A Year With Frog and Toad” earlier this year earned them eight Blue Star Award nominations for outstanding overall production, outstanding direction by a teacher, outstanding musical direction, outstanding technical crew and set crew, outstanding hair and makeup design, outstanding chorus, outstanding featured performance (Natalie Scroggie as Bird/Turtle/Squirrel/Mole) and outstanding character performance (Alec Smith as Snail). The cast of the musical won the Blue Star Award for outstanding chorus, beating out Lee’s Summit High School, Lee’s Summit West High School, Shawnee Mission West High School and Truman High School, according to a news release. All members of the cast, including the stage hands, were chorus members. The chorus of “A Year With Frog And Toad” included Marcus Tetwiler, Nathan Short, Alec Smith, Jami Bessey, Samantha Brocker, Hannah Dussold, Vincent Hermes, Tyler Hieber, Mariah Keller, Shannon Moore, Natalie Scroggie, Alex Weatherbie, Brian Buntin, Katherine Kennedy, Ali Kurth, and James Teuscher. Direction was by Leslie Coats, vocal production by Sandra Buntin, instrumental direction by Barbara Blachly and choreography by Nancy Oliver.
