Paola drivers will now have to get used to a four-way stop at the intersection of Hedge Lane and 303rd Street.

The intersection has been under discussion ever since the city pursued plans to improve Hedge Lane and build a round-a-bout at the intersection. But with those plans now on hold and the installation of a stoplight being deemed too costly, Paola City Council members took action last week to approve the installation of stop signs.

The intersection is near Sunflower and Cottonwood elementary schools, with Paola High School and Paola Middle School not much farther away on 303rd Street. Previously, drivers on Hedge Lane were not required to stop at the intersection.

Public Works Director Gerry Bieker said at the June 23 council meeting that the original plan was to install the stop signs soon after the schools dismissed for the summer, but the city first decided to get a design of the intersection complete.

The project is being paired with the city’s installation of a sidewalk on the north side of 303rd Street from Cottonwood Drive to Hedge Lane. Cottonwood Elementary School already has a sidewalk running from their bus loop out to Hedge Lane, according to a city memorandum.

Bieker said there will be a crosswalk installed at the intersection, and Paola USD 368 plans to have crossing guards stationed at the crossing.
The entire project, including crosswalk and stop bar striping and additional signs, will cost about $1,550.

The council approved the plan unanimously.

“The goal is to get it done as soon as possible,” Bieker said.
