The Kansas State Research and Extension Horticulture Center is hosting a field day to educate the public on various aspects of nature. Attendees can talk with experts about recommended plants in the form of vegetables, grass and flowers. Flower plant trials will be the popular showcase during the July event. Visitors will have the opportunity to see what varieties do well in the Kansas City market and how to reduce their impact on the environment and save money by selecting plants that are recommended. During the event, the center plans to highlight: 45 varieties of sunflowers that are 8 to 12 inches tall; Buffalo grass; flowers in pots and planters; vegetable gardening for home-owners; and fruit for home gardens. University professors will be available to talk about plant issues. The public will have the opportunity to ask volunteers questions at a booth and during a plant clinic. Attendees are being encouraged by event officials to bring plants that are in poor health or for identification purposes. Lunch will be available for purchase. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 25 at The K-State Research Center, 35230 W. 135th St., Olathe. Admission is $5 and includes seminars from trained experts. A bottle of water will also be provided. For more information about the field day, call (913) 715-7000 or visit their Web site at www.johnson.ksu.edu. — Chase Jordan
