Paola officials will do some more number crunching Thursday during another work session to discuss the city’s 2010 budget.

The city’s work session typically falls on the first Tuesday night of each month, but July’s work session has been moved to Thursday. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Paola Justice Center.

City officials have been reviewing the 2010 budget for the past two months as they try to iron out tight financial numbers by making necessary cuts.

Although the city’s assessed valuation did not drop as much as anticipated, City Manager Jay Wieland still has said the budget planning process has been very difficult this year, something almost every municipality is facing as a result of the struggling economy.

The decisions Paola officials make could affect the mill levy, which determines the tax rate in which city residents pay property taxes, but the actual amount a resident will pay also depends on the assessed valuation changes of his or her property.

Paola’s total valuation is $48,340,082, which is a drop of about 1.02 percent. City officials had been expecting a drop of at least 5 percent.
