Robert Eidson’s lucky day almost never was.

Eidson, a Paola resident, purchased a Powerball ticket for the June 20 drawing, and when he came home, he put the ticket on the kitchen counter, according to a Kansas Lottery news release.

There the ticket sat, forgotten, as Eidson and his family continued their lives.

It wasn’t until a week later, when Eidson’s youngest son was trying to reach something on the kitchen counter, that the Paola man saw the ticket still lying there. He told his wife, Chandra, he was going to check it on the Internet to see if it was a winner.

“Wishful thinking,” was her reply.

To Eidson’s surprise, though, he discovered he matched four numbers plus the Powerball, earning him a $10,000 cash prize.

“I went back into the kitchen and told my wife we’d won $10,000,” Eidson said in the release. “She didn’t believe me. She thought I was lying. I decided I’d better have it checked at a store, so I drove a couple of blocks to a grocery store. When the gal scanned my ticket, she wasn’t sure what to do because she’d never seen a $10,000 winner. She called her manager, and he gave me a Lottery claim form and instructed me to sign the back of my ticket. When I returned home, I put the winning ticket on our refrigerator so my kids couldn’t reach it.”

Eidson and his wife, who have been married 15 years, have two sons, ages 3 and 7. They plan to purchase a new washer and dryer with their prize money.

The winning ticket was purchased at Spring Hill 66, located at 22361 Harrison St. in Spring Hill.
