The whole country will get a taste of Miami County in early August when New York Post travel reporter Jennifer Ceaser publishes an article as part of the Post’s “50 States in 50 Weeks” travel guide.

She was greeted in Paola the evening of June 29 by Chamber of Commerce executive director Carol Everhart. Ceaser, accompanied by her father, was led to her room at Canaan Oaks Bed and Breakfast so she could clean up before eating at Beethoven’s, where she ordered a plethora of side dishes and tasted some locally made wine. After dinner, she was treated to a detailed tour of the historic town square and the Miami County Swan River Museum.

Two Miami County history buffs, Rob Nichols and Wayne Johnson of the Miami County Historical Society, served as Ceaser’s personal tour guides, revealing the past behind various buildings and landmarks around town.

Everhart said Miami County’s presence in the Post article is a big deal for Paola.

“It means another avenue that we’re going to get our name out there for people to locate Paola, to visit, open a business and live here,” she said.

Ceaser saw Lake Miola on her way to Canaan Oaks, which she said is fantastic, and she’ll “be getting (her) butt in that lake.”

On the way back into town, Ceaser and her father, James, stopped along the side of the road to see a cow. She said she had not seen one in a while and wanted to get a closer look.

Ceaser visited Osawatomie with the guidance of Grady Atwater before arriving in Paola. She saw the John Brown Museum State Historic Site, the Adair Cabin and several other historic spots.

Atwater, administrator of the historic site, said Ceaser’s decision to visit Miami County shows the national interest in the area.

“They found us; we didn’t find them,” he said. “That tells you something about what we’ve got here in Osawatomie and in Miami County.”

Ceaser said her report will describe the area as a worthwhile day trip for people who are in the Kansas City area for a short time.

“If people are coming to Kansas, they probably aren’t spending a week in Kansas,” she said. “So what I wanted to do was choose some things that were relatively close to major cities, so it isn’t a burden to hop into the car and maybe drive outside (city limits) and see some things.”

She said Paola’s quaint quality is the primary reason New Yorkers would want to visit, and New Yorkers are always looking for something that’s different from what they already know.

“And this is a completely different world. Not just this town, but Kansas in general,” she said. “It’s so different from anything in New York.”

Everhart said she was pleased with the writer’s reaction to the area.

“It was fun. We had a great time looking at Paola, and it was great to see Paola through someone else’s eyes,” Everhart said. “From the comments that were made by her and her father, they thought Paola was an absolutely delightful town.”
