Monday was laminating day at Hillsdale Elementary School, and a few parent volunteers were more than happy to lend a helping hand.

Thanks to the 30 to 40 volunteers who make up the Hillsdale Helpers program, teachers and other staff at Hillsdale Elementary School know there is always someone to help pitch in. The work is especially appreciated after the recent staffing cuts by Paola USD 368, including that of a work-study person who would often help teachers.

Hillsdale Helpers organizer Trisha Walania trained parent volunteers Keely Toman, Sharon Tegarden and Denise Newkirk on how to use the laminating machine at Hillsdale Elementary School on Monday morning.
The parent volunteers sign up to work about two-hour shifts on different days throughout each month, and Walania said they help with a variety of tasks from making copies for teachers to reading to students.

Walania said she likes to keep the shifts to two hours so the parent volunteers still have time for other tasks.
