A storybook came alive for a class of fourth-graders at Sunflower Elementary School on Friday. After having her class read the book “The Relatives Came” by Cynthia Rylant, Erin Kuchar planned a way for her young students to experience some of the same emotions described in the book. In the story, a group of relatives pack into a car and take a trip to visit family members. Kuchar got her students into the trip mood early Friday by playing a game often played in cars during a family trip. Each student had to say what they were taking on vacation, and each time it had to start with the next letter in the alphabet. Later in the day, while the students were at music class, many of their parents, grandparents and other family members sneaked into the classroom and took a seat at their desks. Kuchar was hoping it would bring to life the feeling of the book, although she knew from experience it doesn’t always work. “The first year I did it, they didn’t connect it was because of the book,” Kuchar told the group of parents and family members while they waited for the students to return. There were many shocked faces as the fourth-graders slowly trickled back into their classroom, but many soon realized what was going on and ran to hug their family members, who had set up picnic areas around the classroom. There was all kinds of food and drink that is usually enjoyed on a car trip, such as trail mix, snacks and juice. “This is the best day because I get Oreos,” 9-year-old McKayla Mercer told her mother, Michelle. Each relative then grabbed a book from the library to read to the students until the end of the day.
