Traffic on U.S. Highway 169 just south of Paola slowed down a bit Thursday afternoon after a car burst into flames, blocking northbound traffic for several minutes while volunteer firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Assistant Paola Fire Chief Bruce Hartig said a woman noticed smoke coming out of the engine of the vehicle she was driving so she pulled the car onto the shoulder and got out. By the time firefighters were on the scene, the car was completely engulfed with flames.

A Miami County Sheriff’s Office vehicle blocked northbound traffic while firefighters used a hose to quickly put out the fire, sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky.
Hartig said Paola firefighters used two vehicles, an engine and a water tender, during the incident. There were no injuries.
