The Spring Hill Recreation Commission is beginning new baton twirling classes. During the class for beginners, students will learn many techniques to develop skills. Some of them include wrist and finger flexibility, coordination of low-demand foot positions, proper carriage and body positioning. Students will also have the opportunity to develop memorization skills for terminology, series, sections, routines and performances. The course will be instructed by Melanie Landis, a U.S. Twirling Association certified coach. Classes are taught at two levels. Primary beginners are for ages 5 to 8 and the junior beginners are set for ages 9 to 12. Six-week sessions are scheduled for Oct. 12 to Nov. 23 at Spring Hill Civic Center Gymnasium, 401 N. Madison St. There is no class on Nov. 9. The fee for enrollment is $65, which includes a regulation baton. Participants will be fitted for the baton. For registration or for more information, contact the SHRC at (913) 592-2212 or visit their Web site at www.springhillrec.org.
