EUDORA — There was no stopping the Paola Middle School eighth-grade junior varsity volleyball team in its season finale.
As they have done most of the season, the Panthers came out and dominated the Cardinals on its home court Oct. 5., sweeping matches by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-12, 25-16.

Paola ran its overall record to 18-1 with the sweep.

Lexie Deyer and Alicia Morgan were able to come back from ankle injuries and contribute in these final matches.

“The girls did an excellent job this year working hard to improve each week,” Paola coach Dallas Armbruster said. “I enjoyed working with this great group of girls and hope they continue to play at the high school level.”

Playing in the Paola Invitational on Oct. 3, the Panthers were 3-0 to claim the title.

Paola defeated Spring Hill in three games, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-14 to win a close battle.

The Panthers took care of the Ottawa Cyclones in two games, winning the match by scores of 25-13 and 25-9.
Paola concluded its perfect day with another three-game match, defeating Wheatridge by scores of 25-10, 18-25 and 25-8.

Two girls were moved up to help the varsity so the girls really stepped up and played great to win this tournament.

“Aundrea Tarhini and Erin Brown did a great job setting and Heather Tracy really stepped up and did a great job serving,”
Armbruster said. “We did have some uncharacteristic mistakes in the second sets against Spring Hill and Wheatridge, but the girls really played hard to win in the final set and the match.”

The Paola eighth-grade junior varsity volleyball team had to battle, but the Panthers swept regular season home matches against Spring Hill on Sept. 28.

Paola won the first match in two games. The second match went three games.

The Panthers won the first match in straight sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-12.

After winning the first game in the second match 25-16, the Panthers faced some adversity, falling 18-25 in the second game.
Paola would bounce back for the sweep, defeating Spring Hill 25-16 in the third game.

With the sweep, the Panthers improved their record to 13-1 on the season.

“Serves continue to be strong for this group of girls,” Armbruster said. “We only had six service errors in five sets played.

“We continue to work on our passing as well as communication on the court,” Armbruster said.

Members of the Paola eighth-grade junior varsity volleyball team are Erin Brown, Tiffany Butler, Katey Colwell, Lexie Dyer, Aly Johnson, Katie-Jo Kirk, Alicia Morgan, Sarah Phipps, Aundrea Tarhini, Heather Tracy, Michelle Wilkes and Lauren Wood.
