Sunflower Elementary School students took a trip to the land down under last week. World traveler Randy Nadler, who has spoken at hundreds of schools throughout Missouri and Kansas during the past 30 years, used several photographs and descriptive language during a school assembly Friday where he described his exploits in Australia. Nadler’s educational background includes a degree in biology and vast study in social science, geography and photography, according to the Web site, www.randynadler.com. He has used those tools to educate young students about the world they live in. Nadler has visited Australia four times in the past 25 years, according to his Web site, and his program Friday at Sunflower highlighted everything from the people and history to animals and commerce. The students learned Australia was discovered by James Cook in 1770 and was originally used as a penal colony. Nadler showed pictures of the famous Sydney Opera House and other landmarks before getting to the students’ favorite portion of the program — the animals. All eyes were on the large screen in the school’s multipurpose room, as Nadler showed pictures of kangaroos, koalas, wombats, sheep and even a Tasmanian Devil. Nadler asked some quick-thinking questions throughout the program to test if the students had been paying attention, and usually the Sunflower students were right on the ball. They left with a firm knowledge of Australia’s six states and a number of other facts about the country’s culture.
