Cottonwood Elementary School first-graders got a taste of the working world Friday when they toured six businesses around Paola’s Park Square. The whirlwind tour gave the students a glimpse of what a day is like for the people who work in their community. Breaking into groups of classes, the students got a chance to check out the Miami County Swan River Museum, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Great Southern Bank, Paola Free Library, Design 4 Sports and The Miami County Republic. At Design 4 Sports, the students got a chance to make T-shirts commemorating their special field trip, and at the newspaper office the students got a chance to write their own headlines on a front page. The frigid fall air didn’t stop the groups from bundling up and walking to each business, spending about 30 minutes inside. Though it was nice to get out of the classroom, many of the students and teachers agreed that by the end of the day, they were ready for nap.
