The old school building in Spring Hill has been a topic of debate for several months. On Thursday, during a work session, city council members discussed the possibility of leaving the issue to restore or demolish the building to the citizens of Spring Hill. Members of the Old School House Committee also attended the meeting. Darrell Beck, council member, said nothing tangible had been done, despite numerous discussions about the building located at 401 N. Madison St. “We as a council have to make that decision,” Beck said. “We have to do something right now with the old building.” During a meeting in August, the estimated cost to save the building was $1.1 million. Steve Ellis, council president, mentioned putting the idea on a ballot. He said it would make sense to have the issue on the ballot before spending any money. “I don’t believe that this decision belongs in this room,” Ellis said. Council members discussed the cost of a poll versus a mail-in ballot. “I want it to be a high representation of the community,” he said. Scott Snavely, council member, said the city has to be cautious about the wording because the question would also involve a gym next to the old building.
