Paola Police officers arrested a woman last week who is accused of victimizing several local businesses during the past few weeks, and officers are releasing her photo and information in the hopes that anyone else who may have been victimized by her will come forward. Maralina N. Conner, 31, of Paola was arrested on Oct. 20 and charged with four counts of theft. According to a police news release, Conner’s crime spree began on Oct. 2, when she allegedly entered Emery’s Steak House at 16 W. Peoria St. and stole about $30 in tip money from an employee. Conner’s next reported crime occurred on Oct. 6, when she allegedly entered Miami Lumber at 1014 N. Pearl St. and stole a power tool valued at about $100. Then, on Oct. 13, Conner allegedly entered Rocker’s Pharmacy at 2 E. Peoria St. and stole an employee’s purse and its contents from behind the counter. Total loss was estimated at about $225. The fourth alleged theft occurred on Oct. 16, when Conner allegedly entered Paola Family Center at 808 Baptiste Drive and stole a chain saw valued at $240. Total loss in all four cases was about $595, according to the release. Conner’s eventual arrest was aided by one of the victims. According to the release, one of the victims called the police department on Oct. 20 after seeing the suspect’s vehicle traveling north on Pearl Street. The vehicle headed east on Kansas Highway 68 and then northbound on U.S. Highway 169. Paola Police Detectives responded and alerted the Spring Hill Police Department. Spring Hill officers stopped the 1996 Nissan Altima north of Spring Hill on U.S. 169, according to the release. Conner was taken into custody by Paola detectives and later booked into the Miami County Jail on four counts of theft. She was held on $2,000 bond. “We appreciate the alertness and cooperativeness of one of our citizens that called in the spotting of the suspect’s vehicle,” Deputy Chief Don Poore said. “She certainly helped us get this person apprehended.”
