A Spring Hill High School graduate recently returned to receive an honor and give words of inspiration to the student body.

Becky Sullivan, a junior at Kansas State University, recognized her family and other people with a power clap (clapping twice). The student audience participated in the celebration along with her. The claps of acknowledgment were recognized with a thumb war.

On Thursday, Fort Dodge Animal Health presented Sullivan’s national officer jacket to Spring Hill FFA Chapter. The Jacket  was donated to help the FFA Foundation.

She said the thumb war was a representation of the high school experience — trying to find a fit.

“High school is about finding what that fit is,” Sullivan said. “I was involved in a lot of stuff, but my fit was FFA.”

She also talked about hard work, luck and opportunities.

“If you want something, work really hard and you can achieve it,” Sullivan said.
The K-State student advised the students not to worry about what they want to be when they grow up. She said receiving the blue FFA jacket has given her a new outlook on life.

Judy and Ron Sullivan sat in the front row during their daughter’s ceremony. Becky became involved in  4-H when she was 5 years old and began participating with FFA as a  sophomore.

“It’s been a real experience,” Judy said about her daughter’s national officer experience.

Her brother Ronnie Sullivan is the secretary for the Spring Hill FFA chapter.

“It was different seeing my sister do the talking,” Ronnie said. “It was really exciting. She worked hard this past year.”

Jill Zimmerman, former director of the FFA Foundation, said Becky was an outstanding student.

“FFA is a great vehicle for students to explore their talents and develop leadership skills,” Zimmerman said.

Mary Kane, executive secretary for the Kansas FFA chapter, was also pleased with her accomplishments.

“I think it’s awesome,” she said. “It’s a neat way to honor a young person.”

Micheal Strohschein, SHHS teacher and FFA sponsor, was also named an Unsung Hero by ING. The chapter received a $2,000 award, which will help with future FFA projects.
