Paola High School graduate Alyssa Jobe is making Paola FFA history.

Jobe recently was a finalist for a national award in veterinary medicine, and although she didn’t end up winning at the national convention in Indianapolis in mid-October, Jobe is the only Paola FFA member to twice be named a national finalist.

“Alyssa was the national winner in small animal care production last year and is the only student in the 72-year history of our chapter to twice be named as a national finalist,” FFA advisor Jeff Hines said.

Jobe was a national finalist in the Veterinary Medicine - Entrepreneurship/Placement Proficiency award program. Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gain hands-on career experience, according to a news release.
Veterinary Medicine - Entrepreneurship/Placement is one of 47 FFA Proficiency award categories offered at local, state and national levels.

In recognition of being a finalist, Jobe received a plaque and $500, according to the news release.

Jobe currently works for Miami Veterinary Clinic in Paola and has previously worked at the Iola Animal Clinic. Her work includes the difficult tasks of euthanasia and major surgery along with setting up animal tests, cleaning and sanitizing animal enclosures, communicating instructions to pet owners, properly restraining animals during surgery and collecting blood samples, according to the release.

She is supported by her parents, Dennis and Stacy Smith.
