After months of discussion and revisions, city council members last week approved an ordinance authorizing the operation of golf carts within city limits. Authorization for micro utility trucks, however, was removed from the ordinance entirely. City Clerk Dan Droste said when the city originally adopted the standard traffic ordinance, he had deleted the sections that prohibited the use of golf carts and micro utility trucks from operating on city streets. After much discussion, council members voted to remove micro utility trucks and only allow golf carts on roads within the city that have speed limits under 30 m.p.h. The other requirement for golf carts will be to have a slow moving traffic sign placed on the rear of the cart. “The whole point of allowing golf carts within the city,” Droste said, “is for certain situations where some of the elderly who cannot qualify for a driver’s license who still need to get groceries in town.” In other business at the Oct. 27 meeting, council members: Listened to a report given by Carol Everhart, director of the Paola Chamber of Commerce on Economic Development, concerning a new Web site she has been working on that will be launched this week. The site, www.thinkpaola.com, will include video links to YouTube on the history of Paola and Paola today, maps with the city’s location in relation to Kansas City, news stories, an event calendar, a tab for realtors to post house listings and more information concerning the inner workings of the city.
