With the holiday season approaching and food supplies at local food pantries getting lower, a local salon is working to help families in need. Salon You, located in Spring Hill Plaza, is holding a food drive for local pantries in the area. Sheri Stearns, owner and stylist of the shop, heard about local pantries being low at her church — Edgerton Southern Baptist Church. She lives in Gardner, but she said the surrounding communities are close to her. “I thought it would be a really good thing to help in that endeavor,” Stearns said. “All three communities are very dear to me.” The salon plans to collect food for the entire year. Stearns is a firm believer of doing a little to get a lot accomplished. While she was growing up, she was taught by her mother to never ask for handouts. She knows families in need who are doing everything they can. “I’m not about hands out,” she said. “I’m about hands up.” Stearns plans to communicate with the Spring Hill Multi-Service Center regarding donated items and will give discounts to her customers who donate food. She opened the shop in 2007. There are four independent stylists who work in the shop. To donate, visit 120 E. Wilson St. in Spring Hill or call (913) 592-4040.
