Michael Emery, 21, of Emery’s Steakhouse, has already used a portion of his $25,000 Kansas Lottery winnings to pay off his car completely. But other than that he really has no idea what he plans to do with the money.

Emery, whose been buying lottery tickets since he was 18, purchased a $5 Bass Pro Shops ticket on Oct. 26 from a Conoco Food Mart at 1500 W. Amity Rd. in Louisburg.

“I usually buy them when I feel lucky,” Emery said.

After purchasing the ticket, Emery was driving down the road and scratched his ticket, at first thinking he’d only won $25, he took a closer look and realized it was $25,000.

“None of my friends believed me at first,” Emery said. “I have one friend who still doesn’t believe me.”

Not to mention the trick Emery played on his parents, Todd and Cindy, when they took him to Las Vegas in August to celebrate his 21st birthday.
Michael had taken a picture of a slot machine that had matched three 7s and sent it to his parents saying he’d won a jackpot, so his parents didn’t believe him right away after he told them about the Kansas Lottery ticket, according to a news release.

“I’m proud of him,” Cindy said. “I just really couldn’t believe it at first.”

Michael’s sister, Amanda, was also with him when he bought the ticket, but she said she didn’t think he’d be handing over any of the money any time soon.

“I don’t know what I’d spend it on anyways,” Amanda said. “Maybe a Powerball ticket.”

With the Powerball jackpot at $53 million at the time, a $27.7 million cash value, Michael said a lot of his friends have started to purchase lottery tickets.

“Some are buying lottery tickets and one friend is buying Powerball,” Michael said. “He’s trying to steal my thunder.”

For Michael, after paying off his car, said he plans on just relaxing and enjoying the good life.
