Spring Hill USD 230 has met Adequate Yearly Progress for seven years in a row. District officials recently released the 2008-09 academic update. Results from the Kansas Statewide Assessments show improvements in reading, mathematics, science and writing for students in third grade through high school. Reading results show district students proficient and above in reading at 90.65 percent compared to 85 percent at the state level. Math results are 90.1 percent for district students and 83 percent at the state level. Students who took the Measures of Academic Progress test in the fall scored above the national averages in math and reading. The test is taken by students from third grade to the 10th grade. In addition, the district received 23 Standards of Excellence. The recognition is based on meeting academic goals from the state. Awards are given by grade level and by school building. The 2009 Standards of Excellence applies to students from third through 12th grade. As a result, district officials, teachers and administrators will begin to look at ways to increase scores. Some of the strategies include a practice test for sophomores, class work that reflects ACT questions, focus on core curriculum and more time with teachers.
