Sunflower Elementary School is celebrating American Education Week on Friday with the help of some community guests who have volunteered to be a part of Character Education reading teams. Community leaders are scheduled to read “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” to Sunflower students from 8:20 to 8:45 a.m. Friday’s event will be the culmination of the week, but activities have been scheduled throughout the entire week. An American Education Week banner is hanging in the main hall, and art classes are designing a flag for Sunflower. On Monday, students and staff enjoyed breakfast pastries and listened to the promise statement being read over the intercom, which asks all student to proclaim that “I will work hard and be responsible because my future is up to me.” On Tuesday, teachers wrote the education promise on their boards, and a top writing assignment from each class was given to Principal Staci Wokutch. Today is Sunflower Shirt Day, and students are encouraged to wear a Sunflower shirt. Students are also scheduled to read the education promise together, led by Cathy Stallbaumer over the intercom. On Thursday, students are encouraged to dress up to show a future career they would like to have in honor of Future Career Day. Everything comes together on Friday, when the children are encouraged to wear a Paola Panther shirt, and Wokutch will announce the essay winners from each grade level. The day will be highlighted by the Community Readers for Character Education. Members of the Sunflower Elementary American Education Week Committee include: Michelle Mosher, Peggy Sydow, Pam Wolford, Jolene Pennington and Cathy Stallbaumer.
