Paola High School theater students will take the stage Thursday and Saturday this week to perform the classic play “The Crucible.” The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Paola High School, and the community is invited to attend. “The Crucible” is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. It is a dramatization of the Salem witchcraft trials, and Miller wrote the play as a response to McCarthyism. Director Leslie Coats said there have been no modifications to the script, but she did make a directional choice to remove the play for the Puritan time period. Students participating in the play are: Rachelle Guenther as Betty Parris, Nathan Short as the Rev. Samuel Parris, Jami Bessey as Tituba, Chrystal Thompson as Abigail Williams, Moriah Gallagher as Susanna Wallcott, Hope Waisner as Mrs. Ann Putnam, Brandon Blackman as Thomas Putnam, Ashley Chrisman as Mercy Lewis, Abbi Lopez as Mary Warren, Marcus Tetwiler as John Proctor, Audrey Reynolds as Rebecca Nurse, Isaac Scroggie as Giles Corey, Jacob Gillespie as the Rev. John Hale, Bailey Barney as Elizabeth Proctor, Dimitri Smotherman as Francis Nurse, Brian Buntin as Ezekiel Cheever, Alex Weatherbie as Judge Hathorne, Alec Smith as Deputy-Governor Danforth, Kaylee Farmer as Sarah Good, Robert Hines as Marshall Herrick and Kyam McCormack and Jordan Malone as deputies.
