After community members paid their respects to local veterans last week at the Miami County Veterans Memorial, it was the students and faculty at Paola Middle School who took their turn to honor their country’s heroes. Local veterans had front row seats in the packed Paola Middle School auditorium during the Nov. 11 service, which featured patriotic music from the seventh and eighth-grade band members under the direction of Nick Proctor, who himself is a member of the Army Reserve’s 312th Army Band out of Lawrence. PMS teacher Nancy Brindle helped open the assembly with some poignant thoughts about Veterans Day. “Respect is exactly what we have to have right now,” Brindle said after pointing out that some people in the country have lost some respect for those who have given their lives for their country’s freedom. “We owe that freedom to our military — past and present.” During the service, the students watched four separate videos talking about the history of Veterans Day and the people it honors. “Twenty five million veterans walk among us, and on this day, our nation thanks them all,” the video said. At one point during the service, eighth-grader Kevin Benton stood in front of the crowded auditorium, including the front row of veterans, as he read his award-winning VFW essay about Veterans Day. As the students exited the auditorium, many of them expressed their individual gratitude to the local veterans by walking up to them and simply saying “thank you.”
