Paola Fire Chief Andy Martin is getting a firsthand look at the construction of his department’s new fire station.

Community members have been witnessing the old school building’s transformation taking place at 202 E. Wea Street, and Martin has been right in the thick of things, helping general contractor Rob George of Legacy Contractors with some of the renovation work.

And Martin isn’t the only one, as other Paola firefighters such as Pat Petelin, who is working as a subcontractor to build the station’s training tower, also are helping with the project.

It’s a project that’s a long time coming for the fire department, and Martin said he has been extremely pleased with the construction process and the station itself.
With most of the structural work complete, and the bays intact, most of the recent work has been finishing touches, such as carpeting, painting, cabinetry and some electrical wiring installation.
The project isn’t slated to be complete until February of next year, but Martin said things have been going very well, and he wouldn’t be surprised if it is done earlier.
George, who also recently completed renovations at the Paola Community Center, gave City Manager Jay Wieland a tour of the fire station.

The station will include a large training area, something Martin said the department has been needing, and it will also feature a geothermal energy system.
Some features, such as a decontamination room inside the bay area, will make life a lot easier for the firefighters, Martin said.

A training tower attached to the northwest side of the building will give firefighters a place to practice hose drills and other training procedures requiring a tall structure.
Volunteer firefighters currently are sharing a building with Paola City Hall at 19 E. Peoria St.
