Rick Schoenberger is getting used to seeing his name in print, in addition to the television screen. When Schoenberger’s Paola restaurant “The BBQ Shack” was featured on the Food Network’s program “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” in 2007, he saw an immediate flood of out-of-town customers coming through his doors. Now that his restaurant has been recently featured in two books as well, Schoenberger is hoping to bring back the barbecue crowds that have thinned a bit during the dismal economy. First, The BBQ Shack was featured in “America’s Best BBQ: 100 recipes from America’s best smokehouses, pits, shacks, rib joints, road houses and restaurants.” Now, earlier this month, Schoenberger’s Paola restaurant was featured in the new book “More Diners, Drive-Ins, Dives” by Guy Fieri of the Food Network. The book profiles about 60 barbecue joints across the country, and The BBQ Shack is on the first page of the Midwest region section of the book. It features a background about how Schoenberger started the business and recently moved it to its new larger location at 1613 E. Peoria St. It also includes a recipe for Schoenberger’s jalapeño poppers, as well as adapted recipes for chicken wings and an all-purpose barbecue rub. A map on the wall of the restaurant is marked with pins to represent where many of his out-of-town customers are from, and Schoenberger is hoping the books will help him add a few more pins to the wall. “Most of my business is out of town,” he said. “We recently had people from South Africa and Panama, and they had seen the show.”
