Paola High School junior Beth Petelin now has a greater appreciation of her father’s job as a Paola volunteer firefighter.

Pat Petelin has been busy at the new fire station work site on Wea Street, where his construction business was sub-contracted to build the training tower attached to the northwest corner of the building.

On Nov. 18, Pat and his fellow volunteer firefighters put the new tower to the test as they worked on life-saving drills during a night training operation. Fire Chief Andy Martin said they practiced everything from using an axe to cut through walls to jumping out of a window and onto a ladder.

Beth also was in attendance, but she was there for some photography training. Beth currently is taking a photography class at Paola High School, and it’s becoming a hobby for her.
Although she had never been to a night training exercise, her father said it would be okay for her to come. Martin said he was impressed with Beth’s photographs, which covered the entire experience.

“I’d seen him in action before because he has gotten called out while I was with him, but I’ve never seen the training,” Beth said. “I especially liked it when they flipped out of the window and onto the ladder.”
