Two new doctors will be greeting patients at the Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

AIMAN QANNAN, M.D.
Aiman Qannan, M.D., started his job as a family practitioner Aug. 17 of this year and so far enjoys the work and the residents in the area. Originally from Chicago, Qannan married his wife in 2003, who is from Overland Park. He moved to Tulsa, Okla., to study and complete his residency at the University of Oklahoma and would travel U.S. Highway 169 often back and forth from Tulsa to Overland Park.

“I’m familiar with Paola and Miami County because of driving that highway so often,” Qannan said.

In 2008, he began his job search and found the job with Associates in Family Care, 2102 Baptiste Drive, through the University of Kansas. While in Oklahoma, Qannan said he worked for part of his residency in Bartlesville, Okla., and he is used to a small town setting, which he said he enjoys very much.

Since he is a family practitioner, Qannan sees a broad range of patients.

“From newborns to 99-year-olds,” he said. “My favorite part of the job is seeing everyone in a family. Sometimes you get to know your patients’ whole families — grandparents, parents and their kids.”

Qannan said he still does a lot of reading, however, to keep up with what conditions his patients may have. Even though Qannan said he loves to read about new forms of treatment and conditions, it’s not the best part.
“Everyone here is friendly and I enjoy it,” he said. “It’s not the medicine, it’s everyone you work with that’s the best part.”

DAVID BURNETT, D.P.M.
Although David Burnett, D.P.M., doctor of podiatry has been living in the Kansas City-metro area for a while, he is new to the staff at Associates in Family Care at the Miami County Medical Center as of Oct. 1.

Prior to joining the staff, Burnett worked at his own practice in Paola for nine years, but given the opportunity to work with Associates in Family Care, Burnett said he couldn’t pass it up.

“It’s different working for a large company versus out on your own,” Burnett said. “I think that it improves the services provided to people here and in Olathe.”
Burnett attended the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago and completed his residency in foot surgery in Winchester, Mass., outside of Boston.
Originally from Kansas, Burnett came back to the state in 2000 to open up his own practice. “Referred to as comprehensive medical and surgical management of the foot,” Burnett said of his work. “It’s everything that involves the foot.”

He added he originally became interested in working with feet after receiving his undergraduate degree in sports medicine and athletic training. Working constantly with sports-related injuries, Burnett said he did a lot of work with injuries related to the foot. Burnett doesn’t work with as many sports-related injuries as he used to – he said now his focus is more on preventing diabetes, which he sees a lot of. Burnett said Type II diabetes is seen a lot, and on top of treating it, he said he’d like to take steps in helping prevent it.

“We’re in the preventative mode now,” he said. “The purpose is to inform people about what to avoid when it comes to their diets and how they treat their bodies.”

Burnett added he finds his work to be gratifying in the sense that he can find a solution for people who walk through his door and help to reduce their pain.

“I chose to be here instead of the city,” he added. “It’s more pleasant to work here, where patients care about making themselves better versus taking it for granted, as many do.”
