Children from Head Start have been coming to the Paola Free Library to celebrate Thanksgiving for the last 15 years, according to library director Rosy King. This year was no exception. Around 15 children filed in on Monday prepared to listen to a story and eat lunch, but little did they know what was in-between those two. King said in addition to the library’s story hour on Fridays, the library also invites SonShine Preschool and Paola Preschool to partake in a Thanksgiving feast for kids. The meal included corn, pumpkin pie, juice and turkey bologna in the shape of a turkey. King read from the children’s book, “Pilgrim Children on the Mayflower,” which described the children of the first pilgrims as they made their way to America. The book told the tale of the children becoming bored while on the ship and eating bread and beans, but also encountering a few storms along the way. By the end of the book, the children leave the ship and become friends with the Native Americans and have the first Thanksgiving. After telling the tale, King passed out Indian and pilgrim hats for the children and put on a captain’s hat herself. Then the kids sat in rows on a table, which King told them was a ship, and they set sail for the New World. Along the way, the Head Start students passed through a few storms themselves, where helpers flickered the lights, played thunder music and flicked water from cups to simulate rain. Upon reaching “land,” King told the pilgrims that the Indians were nice and Head Start student Gage Harrison cried out, “YESSSS!” Teacher’s aid Jamie Bird said although she’s been doing this for years with the kids, this year was memorable. “This is the best year that I’ve had with the kids,” she said. “Their participation was awesome.”
