One by one, with their faces beaming with pride, the students of Sunflower Elementary School stood before family members, friends and their peers Thursday in the school’s gymnasium during an assembly to celebrate their scores on state tests. As each name was called, the student who scored in the exemplary category during the state assessments in the spring would walk to the front of the packed gym and receive a medal along with a hug and high five from their teacher. Even the students who were fifth-graders when they took the test, but are now sixth-graders, came back to the school to accept their awards. A similar ceremony took place at Hillsdale Elementary School at about the same time on Thursday. Each student received his or her medal from their teacher, something that was designed to symbolize the hard work and achievement by not only the student, but the teacher as well. “Teachers are at the heart of American education,” Sunflower Principal Staci Wokutch said. Paola USD 368 schools received 21 Standards of Excellence from the tests, which cover reading, mathematics and writing. Hillsdale Elementary earned nine Standards of Excellence, Sunflower Elementary earned five and Paola Middle School earned seven.
