A recent string of alleged thefts has finally caught up with Maralina Conner of Paola.

Paola Police officers arrested Conner on Thursday morning for numerous thefts that have occurred throughout the city. Conner previously had been arrested on Oct. 20 and charged with four counts of theft. She was released on Oct. 22 with the four counts of theft still pending, according to a release.

The thefts occurred between Oct. 2 and Oct. 16 and included stealing tip money from Emery’s Steak House, a power tool from Miami Lumber, an employee’s purse from Rocker’s Pharmacy and a chain saw from Paola Family Center. Total loss in all four cases was about $595, according to a news release.

Within days of Conner’s release from jail on Oct. 22, the police department began taking more theft reports, and Conner was quickly identified as the person responsible, according to a news release.

Paola detectives began surveillance of Conner’s residence in the 200 block of West Peoria Street on Thursday morning, and she was arrested at about 10 a.m. She was later questioned by Paola detectives as well as several outside agencies for crimes she is suspected of committing in their jurisdictions.
Five additional charges of misdemeanor theft in Paola were filed against Conner, all involving purse thefts. Four cases were reported, but in one case, Conner used a debit card at a local ATM, which brought two charges in one case. The cases are as follows:

First Lutheran Church, 401 E. Piankishaw St., total property loss $63.25

North Point Nursing Home, 908 N. Pearl St., total property loss $211.00

United Methodist Church, 209 S. Silver St., total property loss $688.00

Miami County Medical Center, 2100 Baptiste Drive, total property loss $471.00

The thefts allegedly occurred during the two-week period after Conner bonded out of jail on the other four counts, according to a news release. Conner also allegedly committed three additional offenses outside of Paola in the Miami County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction, one offense in Spring Hill, nine in Gardner, three in Olathe and at least two in Merriam, Kan. All of the cases involved the theft of purses, according to the news release.

Detectives from the outside jurisdictions converged in Paola on Friday after Conner was arrested to interview her in regard to their respective cases.

By Thursday afternoon, Conner was in Paola Municipal Court, where she pled guilty to a total of nine counts of theft. She was sentenced to 390 days in jail, and to serve 60 days immediately. She was also sentenced to one year probation and ordered to pay fines and restitution. She was immediately remanded to the Miami County jail, according to the release.

Additional criminal charges are pending against Conner in several other jurisdictions.

“The detectives involved did a fantastic job in this case, getting Conner identified and eventually apprehended and charged,” Paola Deputy Police Chief Don Poore said.
