Paola residents can kick off the holiday season in style Friday during the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The festive event sponsored by the Paola Chamber of Commerce is set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday with music from the Paola High School band, Madrigal singers and performances from Margo Rodewald.

Chamber Executive Director Carol Everhart said the tree lighting and dedication will begin shortly before 6 p.m., after which Santa Claus will arrive to listen to the Christmas wishes of each child present.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office also will have its annual Angel Tree at the ceremony. Community members can choose to adopt an angel from the tree and purchase Christmas gifts for local children in need. There will be a toy drop-off site at the ceremony.

Anyone who misses Santa that night can attend the Sweets With Santa event the next morning at Evergreen Events on the south side of Park Square.

Everhart said the Sweets With Santa event will last from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 28, and children can meet Santa and share cookies and milk. People attending the event are asked to make a donation to the Paola Association for Church Action.
