The City of Spring Hill recently released the following tips for a safer holiday season. The community development department tips include information for shopping, parking, cyber protection, traveling and home protection.

Shopping:
Go shopping during daylight hours. If shopping at night, go with someone.
Dress casually and comfortably and avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
Stay alert of surroundings.
Don’t overload with packages.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash. Try to pay for items with a check or credit card.
Keep cash and credit cards in front pockets.
Have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
Tell children what to do if they become separated.

Parking:
Use the trunk of the car to keep packages out of sight.
When walking in lots, be aware of surroundings and walk with power.
Keep the car locked at all times.
Park where there is plenty of light.
Know where the car is located in the parking lot for quicker access.
When returning to the vehicle, lace keys through fingers to use as a weapon, as well as to have them ready to unlock the doors.

Cyber shopping:
Make sure Web sites provide full contact information. Check for the privacy, security statements and return policies before making a purchase.
Visit the Better Business Bureau Web site, www.bbb.org, to verify a Web site.
Use credit cards offering virtual accounts or changeable account numbers.
Use ATMs in populated areas. Use the machine during the day. Be aware of surroundings.

Traveling:
Use an automatic timer for lights. While traveling away from home, ask a neighbor to watch the home, shovel snow and park in the driveway from time to time.
Avoid having mail and newspapers being delivered. Piled up  items is an indication that no one is home.

Home:
Use indoor and outdoor lights in appropriate places. Do not use broken wires or connectors.
Unplug lights when leaving or going to sleep.
Christmas trees should be at least three-feet away from a heat sources and close to an outlet.
After the holidays, remove the tree to avoid dropping dried limbs and needles.
Candles should be placed away from tree branches. Do not leave lit candles unattended.
