Kindergartners at Cottonwood Elementary School got a little help celebrating Thanksgiving from their second-grade buddies last week. Kindergartners in Niki Cash’s class were busy drawing turkey pictures and writing turkey stories on Nov. 17, and their second-grade friends were right by their side. Cash said the buddies come into the classroom about once a week and help the kindergartners with their letters, sounds and other learning tasks — as well as provide an older friend to look up to. Second-grader Jenna Collier had a blast last week coloring turkey pictures alongside kindergartners Emma Oldfield and Marie Cottle. The students then got to work finishing a story that began “Once there was a turkey ...” Cottonwood kindergartners, many of whom were dressed as pilgrims and Indians on Nov. 17, finished off their celebration with pumpkin pie.
