Paola Middle School students and their parents turned out in throngs for Monday night’s Christmas concert.

The sixth-graders were among the first to perform in the auditorium at the middle school with Doris Robinson as the director.

Students began with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and then went a little non-traditional with “Fiesta Navidad” by Jay Althouse, with some students shouting “Ay Ay Ay!”
From there, students incorporated “Boomwhackers”, a type of tube, which when smacked against a palm makes different pitches of thuds. Students also performed “The Music Fact Rap” by Sally Albrecht and the “Frosty Hand Jive,” by Jill Gallina and is based on the original hand jive tune.

The beginner sixth-grade band started off with a bang in the gymnasium with “Up On a Housetop” with Nicholas Proctor directing. Other songs performed by the beginning sixth-grade class were, “Jolly Old St. Nick,” “Oh Hanukkah” and “Ode to Joy” from Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven.

After much applause from parents juggling cameras, the seventh- and eighth-grade bands took to the floor and performed “St. Nick Salsa”, “Christmas Gloria” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” among others.
